I went through a period of severe emotional despair, not - TopicsExpress

I went through a period of severe emotional despair, not physically caused, but a response to horrific events, nearly half a century ago. It took a long time to recover -- except there are some things you dont recover from, you just learn how to live with them. You wake up in the morning, you clean something, you take your vitamins, you make some coffee, you empty some trash and make some space, you consciously focus on something positive. In my case, I pour it into a keyboard. Thats what I learned how to do. I have no idea what it is like for other people except when they share it. If what I felt then (and occasionally still) is even the faintest intimation of what serious depression feels like, then I begin to understand just how debilitating it can be. It seems to me that our next great area of serious research has to be into the disorders that keep people emotionally paralyzed. Im not a doctor, not a therapist, not qualified to offer anything but a sincere hope that we can learn how to be more supportive of friends and family members who are dealing with it.
