I went to public schools and had some mediocre teachers. My children went to public schools and had some mediocre teachers. It didnt stop us from getting great educations. The expectation that all teachers must be terrific results in measures which make teaching a miserable insecure job that no one would want to hold for a lifetime.It also results in education policy becoming little more than a Bad Teacher Hunt, where every policy from VAM to Common Core ends up scripting and evaluating teachers to the point that their autonomy is gone and their joy in the profession shattered. When you try to explain this to people, they dont listen. Or they dont care. And when the smoke clears, our schools will be no better than they were in the Bad Old Days. Maybe worse.
