I went to the launch of the Western Australian section of Labor for an Australian republic this evening. I have supported a republic for Australia since I was in high school and I continue to support it for the following reasons: Australia is a nation and an equal member with other nations of the family of nations. We should have one of our own as head of state. We are a democratic nation, so the head of state should be chosen in some agreed way by the people of Australia, not conferred on someone by accident of birth. The post of head of state should be open to all, not confined to members of the Anglican Church, much and all as I am a proud member of that church. It should be a prerequisite for holding the office of head of state that they loyally support the Australian cricket team, the Wallabies and Bernard Tomic when he plays against Andy Murray. This applies even if, personally, they dont like sport. If they visit England to watch sport, they should sit next to Prince Harry or whoever as a guest in the royal box, but there should be a wager at stake between them on the outcome. Cheers.
