I will be issuing a policy statement on Common Core on Friday. I would like everyone to take the time to look at my position in detail. But, in short, I believe it is a mistake to not include Common Core as a resource when we rewrite the South Carolina standards. Our 2007 standards were good on knowledge acquisition (what students need to know); but, common core adds knowledge application (what do we do with what we know) and knowledge fluency (the depth and breadth of understanding). While you can throw Common Core out, we need to retain these two elements for inclusion in any new standards we develop. I believe the critical issue in the rewrite process is the effective inclusion of all major stakeholders and a transparent process.
