I will only reach one or two people with this post, but hopefully those people will understand. I grew up with some highly skilled athletes in basketball, not very talented, but skilled. We went to the gym everyday or to the driveway every day and worked on skills. Shooting, ball handling, primary move, secondary move and free throws. Neighbors would come over at 11:00 at night and ask if I would stop bouncing the ball. Our parents were on board with what we were trying to do, which was get real good at basketball. I love to see open gyms and people playing games, but something is missing. I dont see the skills work that puts you ahead of the competition. Lonely gym time or driveway time is rare. Summer vacation was always a time of hard work and long hours. It seems like summer time now is almost all beach time, sleeping in and quite frankly, a rapid weight gain program. One or two open gyms a week wont make you better. If getting better doesnt matter to you, then you probably quit reading this already and you will go through your career without leaving a mark. If you truly want to affect your school and community in a positive way and leave your fingerprint on them, get a routine that is uncomfortably demanding and put your phone down for a second. Its a great time in history to be great because nobody wants to do what it takes to become GREAT. In the end, youll blame coaches, teammates, parents and lack of talent. You get better of worse every day, its your choice. By the way, I am available to those who need to know how to put together a personal plan to get better. I would be glad to offer guidance.. Now, which one or two want a shot at greatness?
