I wish people used the scientific method in their daily lives. It - TopicsExpress

I wish people used the scientific method in their daily lives. It would eliminate a lot of the problems in the world. If you are not familiar with the scientific method, it’s really quite simple… Form a hypothesis. This is basically just an idea, a prediction, about how something works. Next, devise an experiment or a method to test your hypothesis. If the results of the test confirm the hypothesis, it gains credibility. Then continue forming new tests, and invite peers to repeat the experiments to see if they arrive at the same results. Each time the hypothesis is proven correct, it gains additional credibility, and gradually is expanded to become a scientific theory, (which differs from a colloquial theory in that it is pretty much a fact, but it is not fully and completely understood and so not referred to as such. Examples include evolution and gravity.) Now, this is the really important part: if the results of any of the tests or experiments contradict the hypothesis, then it is acknowledged to be incorrect and abandoned. Now, imagine if we were to apply this method of thinking to everyday social problems. For example: racism. Let’s start with the hypothesis: White people are better than black people. (I realize this is a ridiculous premise, but some people actually do believe this, so let’s put the idea to testing.) In lieu of an experiment, we can simply do some side-by-side analyses… Subject 1a: Saint Francis of Assisi. White. Subject 1b: Reverend Al Sharpton. Black. Okay, so from that first experiment, the hypothesis holds as true. Let’s try another. Subject 2a: Albert Einstein. White. Subject 2b: Idi Amin. Black. Our hypothesis is still holding strong. We could be on our way to a theory here. Next test pair… Subject 3a: Jimi Hendrix. Black. Subject 3b: Justin Bieber. White. Boom. Hypothesis shattered. Obviously then racism has no logical merit and must be abandoned by anyone capable of reason. Imagine a world where people based opinions and decisions on reason instead of emotion and/or stupidity. That’d be awesome. Unrecognizable in comparison to our current world, but totally awesome.
