I would like to point something out about a traditional argument - TopicsExpress

I would like to point something out about a traditional argument used by young earth creationists. It goes something like this, Maybe God made the earth to look old. Lets assume he did. There is a fundamental problem with that. In Titus 1:2 it states that God cannot lie. One of the Ten Commandments states that we are not to bear false witness. Well, if God made the rocks and fossils to look old he is bearing false witness and guilty of breaking one of his own commandments. I have a major problem with that. Fundamentally, most Seventh Day Adventists are taught what to believe and never learn to think on their own. They are given an either-or scenario. If you believe in evolution, you cant be a Christian. If you dont believe the Genesis account is literal, then you have to throw the whole Bible out! How so? There are millions of good, faithful Christians who believe in evolution and an ancient earth. I am one of them. So am I going to hell because I believe what science has uncovered using the brains and natural laws God created? Of course not. Can I be a good Seventh Day Adventist. No! Nor do I ever wish to be one again. Ive been there and am never going back. Having faith in God does not mean blindly accepting man-made assumptions about the universe. In the SDA Church there is the Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and Ellen White - not necessarily in that order. Ellen White is infallible, because she is a prophet of God. Okay, if she is so infallible why did she say (with her usual pretentious authority- in Patriarchs and Prophets) that after the Flood a wind buried the wreckage of the flood turning it into coal which ignites occasionally and causes earthquakes and volcanoes. Do any of you actually believe that? Plainly Mrs. White was wrong. And not just a little wrong. She was completely out to lunch! We now know what causes earthquakes and volcanoes. We actually teach the process in SDA schools!!! Yet we also teach that the earth is only 6000 years old! If we teach science classes that include plate tectonics, why in the world do we still endorse a 6000 year old earth? Personally, the denomination should be honest and quite teaching science altogether. When Shannon got his $38,000 scholarship to Walla Walla I asked him what he wanted to major in. He said geology. Then we ran into a big problem. WWU doesnt offer a geology major. Nor does any other SDA university that I checked. Why, because to do so would endorse an old earth paradigm, which would undercut Ellen White and her writings and supposedly undermine the most important pillar in the Adventist system - the Sabbath. How so? If you believe, as I do, that the Creation account in Genesis 1 is an ancient myth which contains elements of spiritual truth you eliminate the sanctity of the seventh day as stated in the Genesis account. But who says you cant still have a Sabbath and believe in evolution? Jews do! Yet, before I even looked more deeply into geology I realized, WITH MY OWN EYES, that something didnt add up. What I was taught didnt match what I saw. So I was curious. I did something extremely dangerous - I thought for myself and did a lot of research. I didnt depend on my pastor or teacher or mother to impart truth. I searched it out on my own. It took me 25 years to reach the conclusions that I have reached, and they are solid conclusions based on solid science, not some fundamentalist quack who calls himself a scientist. You see, the problem with Creation Science is that it has a foregone conclusion that it forces the evidence to reach. Real science has no conclusion except that reached after years of painstaking study, elimination of false hypotheses, and the discovery of verifiable facts about the planet. Science HAS PROVEN the earth is 4.5 billion years old. It HAS PROVEN that there is a tree of life that goes back eons. But most fundamentalist Christians are unwilling to accept the concrete evidence science presents and prefer to employ quack science and ridiculous hypotheses (like an ancient water canopy over the earth) to explain away scientific discoveries. Thank God some Christian denominations have accepted science and gone on with their continuing belief in Jesus and the plan of salvation. Jesus and Charles Darwin can co-exist, as can St. Paul and Stephen Hawkings, St. Peter and Isaac Newton, and St. John and Marie Curie. I will continue to post my evidences of ancient earth that I have discovered. If some of you think I am a heretic, so be it. Ill bring the matches to my own stake.
