I would like to take a moment and add my 2 cents worth when it comes to #sealfies and #Ellen. For those of you out there who may be thinking Why is it, in this day and age, that Inuit are still hunting seals and other wildlife when there are grocery stores where people can just buy food? There are no roads that lead into Nunavut. All resources must be brought in by barge or plane. This adds to the cost of everything. For those of us down south who think that paying $5 for a bag of milk is a tad expensive, imagine paying $15 or more. Whatever price we pay down here, they must pay 3 to 5 times that amount, however, they dont earn 3 to 5 times the amount we do at their jobs. Without hunting, our people would not be here. The world would never have heard the beautiful sound of laughter when two ladies compete in throat singing. The world would never have the beauty of the smile on our chubby cheeked babies. We do not exploit hunting as the white man has. We hunt what we need, give thanks to that soul for giving itself to our families, and use every usable part to show our appreciation. If we do this in the wrong way, that spirit will never ever allow us to catch it again. I have never hunted because I am a life long Urban Inuk, and can sustain myself through grocery stores. However, I have friends who have had to teach their children, at a young age, how to hunt. I think that they need all the support that we can send their way just for sustaining their lives. Lets have a company and a celebrity post a different type of pic, and for every retweet or share we send $1 worth of food and supplies to our Inuit brothers & sisters who are trying to survive on our Native land.
