I wrote a letter to the editor that was printed in todays D&C. I have posted what they printed and below is what I submitted...Apparently they have the right to edit my free speech....But the message was still there. In regards to the May 24 essay by Bill Nojay, I find it amusing that he cannot see the forest through the trees. The firing of the radio show hosts was not an attempt to stem their free speech. It was punishment for their vile dialogue on the air. He referred to George Orwell and the forbidden words, and how bad that would be. Yet he works in a field where there are forbidden words and forbidden actions, set in place by the FCC and his station’s standards, and follows those rules. We, as a civilized society, cannot tolerate any form of abuse or ridicule on any section of our society and then let the persons hide behind free speech. With actions come consequences. I don’t recall seeing an essay from Mr. Nojay defending the free speech of Donald Sterling. I also don’t recall him defending the free speech of Fred Phelps. Maybe there are words and ideals that are too offensive to be defended by him as free speech. Unfortunately, an assault on the LGBT Community isn’t one of them. With rights come responsibilities. We, as a civilized society cannot tolerate any form of abuse or ridicule on any section of our society and then let the persons hide behind free speech. With actions come consequences.
