#ICANTBREATHE I have such a mix of feelings about the Eric Garner - TopicsExpress

#ICANTBREATHE I have such a mix of feelings about the Eric Garner decision ... heartache, anger, sympathy, outrage, helplessness, sadness ... This is not a US problem, it is a human problem. In Canada, we may not have the same number of instances of this kind of police brutality / abuse of power (possibly due to the population difference), but Toronto will have its own day in court when the Sammy Yatim shooting comes to trial (thestar/news/crime/2014/07/30/toronto_cop_charged_with_attempted_murder_in_sammy_yatim_shooting.html). I have admiration and respect for the men and women who for their lifes work run in the direction of the horrible, scary things that most of us in the moment would run away from and do so with the added pressure to act calmly and rationally in extreme situations. But if you are choking someone (with a prohibited maneuver against NYPD procedure), who is unarmed, has been subdued and is not offering violent resistance to your arrest, when does your humanity kick in to stop your violent assault on that person? How many times do they have to say #ICANTBREATHE before you stop choking them?
