IF YOU HAVE THE LOTTERY OR SCHOLARSHIP PAID PARTIALLY BY THE LOTTERY READ THIS AND CALL YOU LEGISLATOR. The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) has informed the University of New Mexico (UNM) that they believe current available funds for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship (LLS) may be insufficient to cover the spring 2014 semester. NMHED, along with UNM and all state higher education institutions, supports full funding for the spring semester while the legislature works on the future solvency of the LLS program. It is our understanding that legislation will be introduced in the early part of the legislative session that would fully fund eligible spring tuition awards. While legislators have assured institutions that funding for this program is a priority, it is still subject to successful navigation of the legislative process beginning January 21, 2014. What does this mean for the spring LLS disbursement? UNM will pay 100% of the LLS award for the spring semester with disbursement beginning on January 15 for eligible students. In the event that supplemental funding is not approved by the state, an appropriate reduction will be reflected on the LLS award amount when details are available. This could create a debt to UNM due to our initial payment to you of the full amount. The New Mexico legislative session begins on the same day as the first day of the spring semester – January 21, 2014. We encourage you and family members to monitor and emphasize legislation that addresses the urgency of full LLS funding for the spring semester as well as a longer term solution that supports UNM students. Again, we believe the spring semester will be fully funded and will keep you informed on the status of the program as more information becomes available. Sincerely, Brian Malone Director University of New Mexico Student Financial Aid Office
