#ILOVEYOGYAKARTA #ILOVESPAIN #ILOVEART #ILOVEDUMAGUETE Yesterday I went to an inspiring talk given by 2 Indonesian puppeteers who just came back from Thailand. When I think of art I always bounce back and forth different systems in different places. I asked the organizers how they funded the project. They said they did it themselves. In this region where public funding is almost non-existent, art people have to be resourceful. When I think of my project Dear Curator Curate Me and what the persons involved have done to make it possible -from the team in Dumaguete to the team here in Indonesia, the more I get weary about the complaints about the cultural environment in Spain -constantly blaming the government, the lack of funding, that its better outside the country, blah, blah and more blah, blah. Coming to Yogyakarta and seeing how their art scene has developed would make Madrid, with all its infrastructure and intellectuals-academics-artists-curators-critics ashamed. In Spain its someone elses fault. There is no sense of community, therefore, there is no art scene, just pockets of activities here and there and people who know each other. Do Spaniards even realize how privileged they are with their passport? The 4th passport in the world that doesnt need any visa to travel. The Philippine passport is a piece of shit, so many restrictions and even now, Filipinos have to show proof of solvency when leaving the country. Yet, in spite of this, art people are trying to create exchanges within the region of Southeast Asia. Yesterday, the joke was, AirAsia funded our project. Thank God for travel discounts, booking a ticket months in advance has actually permitted people here to travel more.
