IM IN A RUSH for HAPPY HOUR, PLEASE LEAVE! Yesterday, we had a long day, defending our school program to the city council followed by a lengthy emergency board meeting to address our schools concerns. Thinking and talking the whole day was exhausting so I wanted to rush out and meet up with my BFFs for our happy hour! As I prepared to leave, a patient came in for her sons acne consult. I checked the patient, hurriedly gave my recommendations, all this time I was standing. I thought to myself, I can spend a few minutes with them. In five minutes, with my fast talk, I think I covered everything and concluded the consult with, ok I will see him in a week or so, in an effort to dismiss them right away. Then silence...and they wouldnt get up from their seats. Oh boy! I want to leave now! Then the mom said, Doc, have a seat for a while, lets chat for a few minutes! Damm, I want to leave now!!! Politely but annoyed, I gave in and sat. As I did, I asked how were things with them? .......and they went on to pour their heart out and told me how miserable life has been with them for the past two years! They told me their story of lingering intense PAIN, HATE, SORROW, DISMAY, FEAR and FRUSTRATION with life....that little blessings never seem to compensate for! I listened intently and my heart just went out to them! I took us another an hour and a half and completely forgot I WAS IN A RUSH TO HAVE FUN! We seem to spend very little time to pay attention to clues of sadness of those around us and often distant ourselves from someone elses problems. Rightly so! Why burden yourself with other peoples problem, you have enough of your own to solve! We also forget, that they do not actually want you to solve it for them............... .........they ONLY NEEDED YOU TO LISTEN!
