IM NOT A MORNING PERSON Have you ever said this phrase? Or maybe you know someone who has? Ive thought about this a lot and I would like to give my perspective because I used to not be a morning person. First, a quote: Before the rest of the world is eating breakfast, the most successful people have already scored daily victories that are advancing them towards the lives they want. - Laura Vanderkam Studies show that Fortune 500 CEOs and influential leaders from every sphere have this same habit in common. THEY GET UP and THEY GET GOING. The question is WHY? Why are the most successful people like this? I think there is one main reason and its the SECRET that many people dont think about. Its this: YOU HAVE MOST CONTROL OVER YOUR SCHEDULE AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE DAY. So, why not just do everything at night? My challenge to this thinking is that the people I encounter have the LEAST ENERGY at night. They have worked hard all day and the evening is the best time to crash. You may have good intentions of getting the important things done before bed, but truly it is a battle of the eyelids! Doing the most important things EARLY gives you momentum and there is actual medical proof that accomplishing important tasks sends happy hormones like seratonin and dopamine into your system, GIVING YOU MORE ENERGY for the day! You might understand this from a rational standpoint, but practically getting there is another issue. Here is ONE KEY HABIT that most non-morning people practice: THEY STAY UP 1-2 HOURS LATER THAN THEY SHOULD Excuses: But I need to check Facebook one more time! That TV show starts at 11:30. I chat with all my friends at that time. Now, before ANYBODY gets a riled up about them not having any other time because their kids get up early, here is a tip we used when we had younger kids. Split the difference of time. If you put your kids to bed at 7pm, they WILL get up at 5am. Consider making bedtime more towards 8-8:30, then parents can have couple time still before a reasonable bed time. Of course there are extreme issues like early work, travel, etc, but on the whole, if everyone could follow some advice that our Pastor, Mark Beeson gives to middle school campers: Dont waste tomorrow on tonight. So, whatever habit you are trying to get moving on - working out, devotional life, meditation, etc, consider becoming a MORNING PERSON, even for just 2 weeks to see how it goes. I think youll be grateful you did!
