IMB: 75% of 2014 pirate attacks occurred in Asian waters According to an intergovernmental anti-piracy group, last year’s Asian waters pirate attacks had increased by 22% year-on-year. That amounted to 75% of the total international number. Publishing its 2014 world report, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) observed that a total of 245 real and attempted piracy acts had occurred internationally during the last year. The comparison with 2013 showed that in 2013 Asia’s piracy attributed less than 60% of the total number. Raids in Asia were mostly thefts or lower-level of crimes as compared with the more serious hijackings and kidnappings near West Africa and Somalia. Asia’s attacks for the year 2014 had been the highest since 2006. The process of collecting reports for the accidents had begun since 2006 by the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP).
