IMPORT UPDATE: The GlobalPort Batang Pier are not taking their chances on Jamelle Cornley, saying the controversial import is not on their list of prospects as reinforcement for the Governors’ Cup. Coach Junel Baculi told InterAKTV that no less than GlobalPort team owner Mikee Romero gave the team a directive to look for prospects other than Cornley, who led the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to the title after winning Best Import honors last season. But Cornley was involved in a major controversy earlier this year, getting arrested in Quezon City while recovering in the Philippines for knee surgery. Rain or Shine has chosen not to bring him back for its title defense, instead tapping another former Best Import Arizona Reid. “It was Boss Mikee himself who told us to go in a different direction,” said Baculi. “He told us na humanap na lang ng iba dahil may pending case nga siya.” Baculi made the clarification amid a claim from a source that Cornley is back in town and attended a Batang Pier practice. The coach denied Cornley’s presence at the team’s training session, but did admit the import’s camp had offered his services for the team. Baculi said that contrary to a report by another online publication (not InterAKTV), no negotiations between GlobalPort and Cornley ever took place. Baculi said he plans to go to the United States on the third week of June to personally scout for a reinforcement for the Governors’ Cup. “Para pagdating ng July kasama ko na yung import,” said Baculi.
