IMPORTANT: We continued our pause following Acts 7 to complete part 2 of our study on the doctrine of the Law. In Luke 11:52, Jesus said, “Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge…” It was the professing experts in God’s law and the most “religous” people on the planet that were not using God’s law lawfully – for the purpose for which it was designed. And Jesus made it clear that not only were they not going to heaven, but they were actually a stumblingblock for others to get there! God forbid that we should be like those lawyers that Jesus rebuked on that day. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and it is through the fear of the Lord that people depart from iniquity. Listen to this quote from George Whitefield (18th century open-air preacher in England) on the matter of the Law, “Before you can speak peace to your hearts, you must be made to see, made to feel, made to weep over, made to bewail, your actual transgressions against the Law of God…the least deviations from the moral law, according to the covenant of works, whether in thought, word, or deed, deserves eternal death at the hand of God. And if one evil thought, if one evil word, if one evil action, deserves eternal damnation, how many hells, my friends, do every one of us deserve, whose whole lives have been one continued rebellion against God! Before ever, therefore, you can speak peace to your hearts, you must be brought to see, brought to believe, what a dreadful thing it is to depart from the living God.” The outline for the message was: 1. “Wherefore then serveth the law?” There is a two-fold PURPOSE of the Law. 2. “It was added because of trangressions…” It DEFINES what sin is – breaking God’s Law. 3. “Till the seed should come to whome the promise was made…” The Law has an END. 4. “Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid.” The Law supplies a NEED. 5. “But before faith came…” Paul explains the SERVICE which the Law is to render. 6. “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ.” This is the KEY for us. (we did not get to the remaining 2 points. We will finish for sure next week. : ) You can listen to the message online under the Messages tab or click on this link… believethebible.org/acts-series/ Please keep praying for us that God would be able to use us for His glory.
