IN MEMORIAM - STEVE ASH I have just heard of the death from a heart attack of Steve Ash on October 18th, sudden and unexpected. Although we had not been on speaking terms for many months (a situation that would undoubtedly have been rectified one day), no one should be in any doubt that I mourn the loss of one of the most interesting and unusual minds to inhabit Facebook. One of my earliest Facebook Friends, out of the Treadwellian network, he was also the occasion of one of the strangest and most entertaining evenings of my life - as guest speaker to the London Anarchist Forum - during which he was always the most perfect gentleman despite the ensuing chaos. And this was his most appealing characteristic - an anarchism of the street combined with the somewhat aristocratic attitude of the natural gentilhomme, a hybrid intellectual vigour and (albeit with some very fixed views on fascists) a breadth of creativity in thought that will be sorely missed. Naturally, I wont be attending the funeral or memorials because I really cannot be sure that he would have wanted me to but I am deeply saddened by his death. I regret that our almost inevitable reconciliation (before my almost inevitable subsequent re-defriending and reconciliation in a cycle of eternal Facebook return) did not take place. Rest in Peace Steve, though you may leave the spirit of Steve Dionysos behind you ... my condolences to his elderly mother and to his closer and more longstanding friends.
