IN MEMORY: THE LATE ABDUL HAMID BIN AHMAD ‘An everlasting Padang smile’ HE was a Padang gentleman-staff everyone loved because the late Abdul Hamid bin Ahmad discharged his duties as a PR executive with a genuine human touch. He had an everlasting smile, he smiled when he was angry or disappointed but the trademark endearing smirk won him countless friends. Arguably, one of the most loyal and longest serving Padang employees, I vividly remember him during my term as SRC Vice President in the early 1990s, when the traditional 1883-founded clubhouse was torn down to make way for the ultra-modern “Oasis on the Padang”. I recollect his unusual dedication to work, which he did with the biggest of hearts, a thankless PR Padang job on the frontline, which entailed interacting with members, from dawn to dusk. But he discharged his duties, not only without fear or favour, but with the absolute interests of members. I was always impressed as he went about his duties as the Padang clubhouse was his second home, treating members, with respect and reverence, regardless of race, language, religion or even age. He spent his retirement years quietly in his enlarged family-fraternity at his Johor Baru home and when he died on September 24, his daughter, Tasha Linda wrote on Facebook: “The death of someone very close to me leaves me shocked and in total grief. Words cannot explain how much he bent backwards for me. He spoiled me rotten with all the love and care of an endearing father. I will never forget him.” Likewise, the Padang fraternity will forever remember the trademark smile of the late Abdul Hamid, who deserves this befitting tribute in recognition of his significant role as a Padang stalwart in his own way, who went beyond the call of duty for members. Rest in peace, my good ‘ole friend. We will never forget your everlasting Padang smile!
