INSERT 34 #Nomvuyo It was now Friday, the day of the memorial service. Liwa, Nyami and I had been in that apartment day in and out. Zimkitha insisted on us staying out of the way till the day of the funeral. She was obviously trying to avoid drama. To be quite honest if Zodwa and I had a great relationship I would be more involved but the detachment between us made it feel like I had lost a long lost aunt. Anyway I made them breakfast and dished up for them. Nyami: Thank you Vuvu. Me: You’re welcome. I looked at Liwa. Him: Thank you. Me: Sure. We began eating. I didn’t really touch my food. Liwa: Why aren’t you eating? Me: I’m not hungry. He looked at me for a while and then nodded. Me: I have to see Fezeka today. Liwa looked at me. Him: Ngoba? Me: Nje… Him: Uzom’bona ksasa. Me: I wasn’t really asking you. Him: You’re not going. Nyami was listening to us. Nyami: Vuvu uyaphi? Me: Ngizobuya emini yezwa? Nyami: Can you bring me sweets? Me: I’ll get you some baby. She smiled and nodded. I stood up and took my plate and went to put the food in the oven. I then made my way to the bedroom and got ready to take a shower. I was about to take off my clothes when Liwa walked in and closed the door. He walked towards me. Him: Uthi uyaphi? Me: Ngiyobona uFezeka. Him: Isn’t she coming to the memorial service tonight? Me: She is. Him: So what’s happening now? Me: Liwa I need some fresh air. We’ve been locked up in this place for a week! Him: Then why didn’t you tell me? We could always go out and do something. Me: No it’s fine. I’ll go to Fez. He looked at me for a long time and I cleared my throat. Me: So uhm can you please excuse me? I want to shower. He stood there and nodded after a while. Me: Thanks. He gave me one last look and then walked out and closed the door. I took off my clothes and made my way to the bathroom. After I was done showering I went back to the bedroom, lotioned myself and got dressed. As I was fixing my hair there was a knock on the door. Me: Yes. Liwa walked in with Nyami. They lay on the bed and watched me get ready. Nyami: Mommy you look pretty. Me: Thank you Nyami. Liwa kept quiet and just looked at me. After a while I finished up. Liwa: Is Fez going to fetch you? Me: Yes. He nodded. Me: I have to get going. I’ll see you guys in a couple of hours. Liwa: Is she outside? Me: Uhm… Him: I want to say hi to her. Me: No she is going to meet me in town… Him: Is it? I nodded. Him: So let me take you there. Me: Liwa it will literally take me 15 minutes to walk there. Him: I was planning on going to town anyway so I don’t mind. Me: No- Nyami: Come on mommy! Uncle Liwa will take you to town! She rolled her eyes. Me: Did you just roll your eyes at me Nyameko? She kept quiet. Liwa got up from the bed and got dressed. Him: Let’s go. Me: Nyami is still in her py- Him: Asambe. Me: Uhm ok… He picked up Nyami and grabbed his car keys. Nyami was busy laughing and giggling. I got my bag and we walked out of the apartment. We made our way to the car and he drove off. Liwa: Where exactly are you meeting her? Me: Just drop me o- Him: Nomvuyo. Me: Would you let me finish my sentences? Him: Don’t front with me. Me: Just drop me off lana… Him: Where is she? Me: She’ll get here. He parked the car. I was busy getting out when I saw Veli getting out of the car opposite ours. My eyes shot up and I looked at Liwa who had also seen him. His jaw immediately tightened up. Nyami: Bye Vuvu! Me: Bye baby. I quickly closed the door. Veli saw me and smiled warmly. He walked towards the car and I met him halfway. He was genuinely happy to see me and so was I but at the same time I was dreadfully uncomfortable because I knew we were being watched. We finally got to each other and we hugged. I tried giving him the church hug but he was not having it. Veli: Nomvuyo. He finally let go of me and we looked at each other. I relaxed at the sight of his warm smile. For a minute I had forgotten about the audience. Me: Hi Veli. Him: It’s been so long. Me: I know… I could now feel Liwa behind me. Veli moved his eyes from me and looked at Liwa. Liwa: Veli. Veli: Good morning Liwa. Liwa: How are you? It’s been long. Veli: It really has… I’ve been good and you? Liwa: We’ve been good. Veli looked at me. Veli: You have? I smiled uncomfortably. Veli: Uhm it was good seeing you again mate. He looked at me. Veli: I’ve reserved a table for us in that restaurant over there so let’s get going. I didn’t need to turn around to know that Liwa’s jaw was beyond tightened. Veli: I’ll see you around Liwa. Liwa: It was good seeing you… Veli nodded. Liwa then tapped my shoulder. Liwa: Nomvuyo. Me: Yes Liwa. Liwa: You left your phone in the car. I looked at him. Me: I did? He nodded and the handed it to me. Me: Thank you. He smiled and nodded. Liwa: When should I fetch you? Veli: Don’t worry about that. Liwa: Are you sure? Veli: Definitely. I’ll take her home. Liwa: Because we live together so I figured I’d come get her… We’re literally 10 minutes away. Veli looked thrown off. He recovered and smiled. Veli: No I’ll bring her… Liwa: Alright then. Enjoy your brunch. Veli: Will do. Liwa turned and walked away. I was just waiting for the earth to swallow me. Veli cleared his throat and I turned and faced him again. Veli: We sh- “Mommy!” I turned around and looked at Nyami who was smiling from the window. Nyami: Don’t forget the sweets! With that said the window rolled up and Liwa drove off. I didn’t even want to turn and look at Veli… He cleared his throat again. Him: Let’s go… I looked at him and nodded. We walked to the nearby restaurant.
