[INTER]SECTIONS Interdisciplinary art may be a fairly new term in the grand scheme of art’s history, but interdisciplinary approaches to art are far from anything new. From the scientist, inventor and painter Leonardo da Vinci to the poet, painter and designer William Morris, artists have explored and combined various modes of interest and expression for centuries. From March 24 –April 19, the Westchester Community College Fine Arts Gallery will present an exhibition that examines interdisciplinary art in a current technological context with [inter]sections, a show featuring five male artists who integrate radically different elements, skills and ideas to produce their work. The fact that all exhibiting artists are male is pure coincidence, according to curator Claudia Jacques. “I admire their creative processes, especially their ability to integrate radically different elements, skills, and ideas, as much as the works of art they produce. Their work illuminates the shape of the future of art.” Code, drawing, mail, software, sound, sculpture, and video are utilized to explore the intersections of education, art and technology in this unique show. Highlighting process and practice, this exhibition seeks to involve the viewer both physically and metaphorically; form will emerge from function within the gallery environment. An interdisciplinary artist, designer, educator and researcher - curator Claudia Jacques has always been fascinated by artists’ creative processes. “Artists who integrate technology and knowledge add multiple layers of complexity to their creative processes,” says Jacques. “The artists in this show were chosen because I have been fortunate enough to have been exposed to their interdisciplinary creative processes and find them to be true representations of this emerging ‘field.’ [inter]sections is an invitation to experience these artists’ processes. As I said, they are amazing artists, who use the most complex technologies, tools and skills to convey their messages. Their final products are amazing in themselves, but in my view their processes are pure genius.”
