INVITATION Hello, Three full years have passed and the tragedy in Syria continues. Tens of thousands have been killed, over twelve thousands of which are children. Hundreds of thousands are detained or went missing. Millions have been mobilized inside the country and abroad. Lack of international community’s response created a state of chaos that sucked in a wide variety of unwanted people and groups with different agendas. Furthermore, it was noticed that some groups might be recruiting Syrians and foreigners from different countries to join them in their fight in Syria. Sources say that more than 30 Canadians have joined different military groups in Syria, and few have been killed. Some believe that joining military groups in Syria is one way of supporting Syrians and the Syrian revolution. Another way of supporting Syrians and their revolution is donating money, directly or indirectly to people, groups and agencies inside Syria and abroad. Some Canadians have been involved in collecting donations and sending them to Syria and/or to the refugee camps in Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon. The government of Canada has labelled some groups in Syria as “terrorist” groups. Furthermore, the law in Canada does not allow Canadians to join any group for military training and/or action. Many Canadians are not aware of the legal issues surrounding their way of supporting the Syrian revolution. The Syrian Canadian Council would like to clarify what is right and what is wrong in the eyes of the Canadian law when dealing with such issues. We would like to hear from a prominent Canadian immigration lawyer and human rights activist, Barb Jackman to shed light on the Canadian law, rules and regulations that deal with such matters. We also would like to hear from RCMP, represented by Inspector Lise Crouch, regarding the rules and regulations implemented in these situations, the services provided by RCMP, how to be approached, and how to prevent unwanted engagement in actions that trouble the safety and security of the Canadian society. Please join us Saturday, March 22, 2014. From 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM Amsterdam Hall Novotel Hotel, Mississauga. Syrian Canadian Council
