IQ AND FRIENDS By Lyn Dimaano After my class on Abstract Reasoning, during which I explained the relationship between IQ and having friends, one of my students, an 18-year old, came to me to ask how to get her IQ measured. Knowing she was a college junior, I asked what that would be for. SHE: Maam kasi, nakinig ako sa inyo kanina. Pag kasama ko ang mga kaibigan ko, lagi sila pare-pareho ng iniisip, lagi na lang ako kaiba, tapos sinasabi nila, Mali ka.... Pinagtutulungan ako... ME: And you need to have your IQ measured for what? SHE: Para proof. ME: Proof na mas matalino ka kaysa kanila? SHE: Opo. ME: Hija, unless you teach Abstract Reasoning, IQ scores are not useful in proving your qualification or superiority over others. Intelligence is seen in the way you talk, act, and usually, your academic performance, which people (sometimes mistakenly) use to confirm any suspicion that you are indeed a bright kid. As it is, high IQ scores alienate those with less than stellar ratings, and these people will want to cite instances where you may not be performing as expected. You dont need that harassment. If you need to know your IQ so you will understand yourself better, I can make you a referral. However, what you really need to do is make yourself less dependent on other peoples approval. If your IQ is significantly higher than normal, then you must expect that what the majority know is not the same as what you know, and its very likely you will be proven right with time. Stick to your guns, win or lose, if you are sold on your ideas. Your friends will eventually come around. If they dont like you for your ideas, and the higher your IQ the greater is the probability this will happen, then they are not your peers and are not likely to be real friends with you. Its alright. You dont need many friends anyway, and one or two wholl last you for life will do. Think this over, and, if you still want to take a real IQ test, Ill lead you to a good testing provider. SHE: Sige po, Maam. Pag-iisipan ko. Salamat.
