IRVINE LAKE REPORT By Steve Carson 8/18/13 Irvine Lake catfish bite still simmering; Trout Opener announced for November 1 Very good numbers of catfish were on the menu at Irvine Lake, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “The best bite has been from about 6:00 PM to about 11:00 PM”, observed Getty. “Most of the catfish have been prime ‘eating size’ 2 to 6-pounders, but as September arrives, we anticipate seeing more of the bigger channels and of course the monster blues.” Getty added, “We are excited to announce that our 2013-14 public trout opener will be on Friday, November 1, and there will also be a special limited-entry ‘VIP Fishing Day’ on Thursday October 31. As always, thousands of pounds of trout will be stocked just prior to the opener.” Good stringers of catfish were checked in from Boat Dock Cove, the west shore, and Santiago Flats. Productive baits included shrimp, mackerel, bonito, and skipjack; either fresh or with strong scents like Gulp! or Bite-On added. Bass anglers found steady action on 2 to 4-pound largemouth on dropshot rigged plastics during the day at 25 feet, and on various reaction baits and weightless plastics during the evening hours. No anglers ventured out for crappie, and the few deep water trouters did not report in with anything solid. Families with children age 12 and under did very well in the Kids Lagoon on small carp and 1 to 3-pound catfish on mackerel and shrimp. Surface temperature on the main lake is 76-81 degrees. Underwater visibility is rated as gin clear. The lake level is receding slowly. Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included: Ronson Smothers of Los Angles, 12-0 channel catfish on mackerel at mid-lake Lily Marie of Costa Mesa, 9-1 channel catfish on Bite-On at the flats Yung Kim of Garden Grove, 8-6 channel catfish on mackerel at the flats Danny Jackson of Santa Ana, 20-1 blue catfish [released] on mackerel at mid-lake Don Spencer of Silverado, 4-3 largemouth bass [released] on plastics at the Red Clay Cliffs Marlon Meade of Anaheim, 3-1 wiper [released] on mackerel at the flats Follow Irvine Lake on Facebook, on the web at IrvineLake.net or call 714-649-9111
