IS HE WHO DIES AS A RESULT OF SMOKING CONSIDERED TO HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE? Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah Question: May Allaah bless you; is he who dies as a result of smoking considered to have committed suicide? Answer: Do you believe that he who smokes does so in order to die? Answer me, does he do so (for that purpose) or not? (The man answers in the negative) That’s it. Then he is not committing suicide. However, he who places explosives upon his stomach and goes to his enemy and detonates them there, is he committing suicideor not? He is committing suicide. There is a difference between one who intends to kill himself and the one who doesn’t intend that. However, it is said that if it is obvious that smoking leads to death then this is from the strongest evidences for the statement that it is Haraam. I have no doubt that it is Haraam; smoking (that is). This is due to what it contains from bodily harms, harms to one’s character, and monetary harms. Do you not know that the one who smokes, if he does not have (money to buy cigarettes) he will sell his honor (to buy them)?! Is this a calamity or not? (The man answers in the affirmative) Exactly, this is indeed a calamity. Well, at any rate, we do not doubt that smoking is Haraam. However, we do not say that he who smokes commits suicide because he did not intend suicide while doing so.
