IS MYERS-BRIGGS LIKE MEANINGLESS? Theres no evidence behind it, says Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at U Pennsylvania. It claims 93 questions can define you as 1 of 16 types — and that serves as a framework for building relationships or making a career choice. Several analyses have shown the test is totally ineffective at predicting peoples success in various jobs. Half the people who take it twice get different results each time. In 1921, Carl Jung, an early psychiatrist, published Psychological Types based on his personal observations. He said that humans fall into 2 main types: perceivers and judgers. Perceivers can be split into people who prefer sensing and others who prefer intuiting. Judgers can be split into thinkers and feelers. This creates 4 types of people. All 4 types can additionally be divided into introverts and extraverts. Using Jungs work Katherine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers came up with 16 types and gave titles to each of these types, like the Executive, the Caregiver, the Scientist, and the Idealist.
