ISLAND GIRLS AT THE ART SALES & RENTAL GALLERY Remember the 6 artists that went to a painting retreat last summer to Long Island, Five Islands? They used cranes, cables & a bit of courage to get art supplies & luggage off the boat and up the island’s sheer cliffs. The painting they did at this retreat is now on display at Art Sales and Rental Gallery, 1723 Hollis St., Hfx, to January 31. Hours Sun–Mon, noon–5pm, Tues–Sat, 10am–5pm. (The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia next door is closed on Mon & Tues.) ❝The painters depict an enchanted land of mud flats and the calm sea, views to Egg, Pinnacle and Moose Islands, boardwalks through the trees, giant moss-covered tree roots and a moody moon in the mist painted by both Louise Baker and Denise Soper. It’s fun to see how the artists’s visions and styles differ as they paint the same subjects. Baker zeroes in on close-ups of wildflowers and a bird’s nest in a tapestry of blues and yellows. Only Soper paints the figures of the women in her soft, atmospheric style. Styles range from Susan Paterson’s classical realism in subdued earth tones to Judy Arsenault’s vigorous, chippy, hotly coloured encaustic and acrylic paintings. Zehava Power’s loose and lively style makes room for sparks of blue and red beneath the dominant greens and browns in Solid Footing, a magnificent acrylic of moss-covered tree roots running up to a trunk.❞ – The Chronicle Herald
