ISSUES FROM THE GRASSROOTS (A) The people in our localities were made to believe that politics is all about distribution of elective positions across Constituencies. This has gotten deep into the mentality of most Nigerians and our political parties have used it in manipulating the citizens. In fact, this is the genesis of all our political issues, it is also the reasons why we are divided in terms of ethnic and religious backgrounds. We must remember the wisdom behind admitting children and students from different backgrounds into one school or one institution, why do we all sit and learn in one classroom, why do all the teachers with different subjects use the one and only blackboard? For all the positions of responsibilities in schools, it has never being based on any other thing better than merit which can guarantee performance. Recently, in my political activities at the grassroots, I came across respected individuals in our communities that decried that such practice is grossly undermining all effort to bring the citizens together. They explained that each single household will want to claim to have being marginalized politically, therefore they will want to be represented even if those representing them are doing good. The implications of zoning in politics is not only outdated but, it will remain the biggest reason why Nigerians will continue to promote division, sentiments and lack of tolerance. We must move away from old practices that are not favoring our collective essence simply because such practices impede peace process and automatically hampering every developmental efforts in our societies. The best we can do is to ensure that our laws are being respected and culprits most be made to pay for their actions. IF WE CAN ZONE ELECTIVE POSITIONS, THEN WE ARE EXPANDING THE LINES OF DIVISION BUT, IF WE MERIT INDIVIDUALS THEN, WE ARE PROMOTING GOOD VALUES, PEACE AND UNITY.
