IT CAN REALLY BE DIFFICULT TO WRITE; HAVE BEEN BATTLING FOR THE PAST FIVE DAYS TO PUT JUST THESE LINES TOGATHER....MY WORK-IN-PROGRESS. wRITERS, A WORD FROM YOU CAN CHANGE THE SUBSTANCE OF THIS IMAGINATION! “You too like sleep, na wa to you”, he bantered with her in pidgin English, balancing properly his black school bag on his broad shoulder where it was sliding down. “You no like sleep? Park joor” She banged her right fist on the stainless table in a jocular manner, and with her left hand poked Unimke by his ribs. Her long dark hairs glistened; the periphery of her nose, arresting, and the curve of her chin remained a puzzle for his eyes. Unimke had noticed her raw beauty before long; he laughed lightheartedly. He liked to play with her, and she gave him keen attention whenever he went there to eat. “Wetin you want, chop chop?” She purred in her characteristic manner that endeared Unimke to her. He laughed cheerily, and asked for what the lone eater was absentmindedly eating, grabbed a bottle of Coke from the deep freezer, and sat directly opposite her. But she did not raise her head to acknowledge his presence, even when he chatted boisterously with the drowsy waitress. AND THE NEXT TWO PARAGRAPHS READ: Close to where she was seated, he could hear the tap-tap of water drops from the leaking sink where dinners washed their hands. Sitting directly opposite her, he still couldn’t clearly see her face because Beneath the Rubble, the book she was reading, covered her face. She wore a black pair of jeans, a sky blue T-shirt, a navy-blue sweater that had a zip running from neck to waist unzipped; her canvas was a black one; the carefully combined outfit dignified her slim, model-like frame. For about twenty-seven minutes or so, they sat in the heaven-like dining room saying nothing, absolutely nothing. She was looking into her book and he, fiddling with a piece of plantain, wondering what to say. From where the tenacity came, he didn’t know; he only found himself saying:
