Ibn Taimiyyah (rahimahumullah) was a great scholar who has sacrificed so much for the Ummah. He fought the Mongol hoardes, fearlessly spoke the Truth in very difficult circumstances, spent many years in jail without compromising his principles and he even died in jail. Al Ghazali (rahimahumullah) too served the Ummah with great distinction. He gave up do much pomp and glory being associated with the rulers, gave it all up, went on a spiritual quest. He fought the liberals of his day, inter alia refuting the philosophers and reigning in extreme views in the duscipline of kalam. In fact, he probably set the scene and placed the infrastructure in place for the rise of the Lion of Islam Salahuddin Ayyubi. I remind myself first the saying of Rasulullah SAW in a Qudsi Hadith man aada waliyyan fakad azantu bil harb. If you wage war against my Wali I will wage war against you. So be careful. If we disparage such luminaries , be prepared to have Allah azzawajal wage war against you. Wallahualam. Barakallahufeek.
