Id like your take on what creative project you would work on if you had a week all to yourself in a free cabin in the woods. At this time, my amazing boss has given me the go-ahead to submit a proposal for an Artist-in-Residence program on our new local National Monument. Other National Forests and Parks have versions of this program, in which professional and/or amateur artists spend time (i.e. a week) in a cabin working on a creative project, such as a performance piece, written work, visual art, etc. Your creation would be shared at an end-of-season group show. Keep in mind that the cabin and overall experience wed offer would be completely rustic: outdoor cooking, no indoor plumbing, no electricity. Youre camping in instead of camping out. What you would get is a sturdy cabin for a week in summer with a living room/bed (bring your sleeping bag), and an adjacent studio space in which to work. A hundred yards away is a small cafe and country store, so civilization isnt completely absent. Im currently chatting up other project coordinators about their existing Artist-in-Residence programs (Colorado, New Hampshire, and even Alaska--which is a wilderness program that pairs artists with rangers in the field). I would also love your thoughts on what youd like to see in such a program, knowing the settings physical limitations described above. What would you do with a week to create your art? How would you keep comfortable in a rustic space (i.e. if you need creature comforts, this program may not be a good match)? Im eager to get your input as I draft my proposal. Thanks!!! Happy glamping.
