If HOB Sunset is going to be demolished, its our fault as musicians. If we worked hard enough to create something worth seeing & hearing live, there would be plenty of people showing up and I believe there would be a real music scene happening. These venues would have no reason to close. Truth is, Ive played in too many bands that dont want to do the work, dont want to rehearse, and dont want to do much more than dress up & play rockstar. I played in a band that prepared for two shows in front of 2,000 people per night by rehearsing a total of one hour. There is a sense of entitlement that too many musicians have, where they believe that just showing up with your rockstar uniform on gets the job done. People ask me how I feel about tribute bands ~ I think theyre cool and they do have a place in todays music business; look at what Damage Inc did at the OC Fair on Saturday. But, todays musicians are asking the wrong question: What tribute band can we start that hasnt been done yet? The question we SHOULD be asking is, How can we write a song that will change the world? Please, no excuses about illegal downloading and $1.29 per song. If you have to earn your living by playing live, so be it. Write meaningful songs and start a revolution. Be great at it. Be amazing at it. Be the best live band in the world. Become a legend. Thats what Im striving for. Every day. Just my opinion, but to me, music is WORK. If you do the work, you get results. If you take shortcuts, you get demolished.
