If a Koran is illuminated by a master painter, or copied by a great calligrapher using the finest paper and ink mixed with lampblack from a holy shrine, its worth is increased beyond price. Ultimately though, the value of this book lies not in what it feels like and looks like, but in what it does. It is an interactive thing; it generates blessings, absorbs devotions; its political and intellectual uses are fluid and open-ended. As such, it may have something in common with Druckers notion of the artists book as a conceptual or performative space, a dynamic arena of perceptual interaction. Words from Holland Cotter, from the preface to The Century of Artists Books by Drucker - with which I now welcome Reem Falaknaz from the UAE, who signed up to participate in our program - woohoo! Looking forward to that, Reem Ecotone, and see you in Lebanon.
