If asked to join a campaign to protect a the right of Muslim women to wear a burka, I and the vast majority of my friends would refuse on the basis that the burka is an oppressive method of controlling the lives of millions of people driven by tyrannical men and the despotic representatives of a regressive and archaic religion. What I don’t understand is that quite a large proportion of my friends would and in many cases do support a campaign for the right of gay people to get married..? In a church..? By a priest..? Is it just my imagination or are there some pretty obvious parallels there?
