If my company was to hire someone who had to spend all their time - TopicsExpress

If my company was to hire someone who had to spend all their time in a wheelchair, it would be possible. But wed have to lower our counter and the employee would be unable to access our stockroom or help with deliveries or replenishment. They wouldnt be able to fetch shoes and would find it difficult to fit them. If we hired a dead or mute person who was unable to communicate easily with strangers, the opposite would be true and they would be unable to cover the shop floor on their own over lunch breaks. My company currently has no incentive to offer jobs to people who are unable to disabled people. Allowing companies to pay a fraction of the minimum wage to people with these restrictions would create jobs for people who would be unable to work otherwise, and the government topping the wage up would ensure that disabled people still received equal remuneration. This seems to be exactly what Lord Freud was suggesting, and it seems like a great idea to me, allowing people to work and gain experience rather then just assuming that theyre unable to. I welcome any counter-arguments but as it stands I really dont have a problem with what he said (I do understand that I am not disabled and this my opinion on the matter isnt particularly valuable. But then again, neither are any of the Labour frontbenchers who are criticising Freud)
