If the marijuana markets can bolster Colorado[1] and Washington[2] states economies to the point where tax surplus is a reality, and the populace is getting net benefits from a previously illicit trade, there are some serious things to consider in terms of how the nations of the world deal with this problem. There is a very real opportunity for First Nations to take advantage of their own right to self-governance. While Canada is behind these states in terms of regulation, the fact that self-governance through treaties is in place, or on the horizon for many First Nations across the land definitely gives me pause to think: is it so alien to think that Canada and its provinces will eventually accept marijuana persecution to be something that is cost prohibitive? That marijuana isnt the demon its been painted out to be for so long? I am not saying that this is a miracle drug[3] that will fix the taxpayers problems, or that marijuana use doesnt bring its own problems[4]- but the opportunity is ripe for the picking here. There is an opening for the tucked-away-and-largely-forgotten First Nations to make waves here- there are jobs to create, markets to explore. Room to grow. I know it wont be easy, as marijuana does have staunch detractors out there- but the movement for marijuana awareness is not without support either. Thanks for listening. Alexander Bob.
