If the reports emanating from New Delhi are to be believed, the Centre might declare Hyderabad as a union territory and a defence capital of the country, while carving out Telangana state from the rest of Andhra Pradesh. The proposal, which is said to have come from President Pranab Mukherjee, is under the close examination of the Defence Ministry and very soon, the Centre is expected to take a decision the same. Sources said the Centre has been viewing Hyderabad as the most important city in the South India in the wake of its peculiar nature: the city is landlocked and therefore, it is absolutely safe for defence establishments. It can have a military base, besides a big storage facility for arms and ammunition. Since it is more or less centrally located, it has a wider access. Thirdly, in the wake of reports that Hyderabad is turning into a hub of terrorists, the presence of a strong military base is essential to make the country safe. That is precisely why the Centre does not want to leave the fate of Hyderabad to Telangana nor does it want the city to be a bone of contention between Telangana and Andhra. Instead, it would be an autonomous unit. There might not be much resistance from the people of Telangana, if Hyderabad is converted into a military capital of the country, since the rights of all sections of people could be protected here, sources said.
