If theres any way to tell the story of Indias struggle for independence, Dominique Lapierre & Harry Collins have done it to perfection in their book, FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT. Their mannerisms of transcribing history into the pages of a book is, in my opinion, the way history should be depicted, poignant and turbulent, in all its facets. The amount of research theyd put into creating this epic tome is just astounding and they even had the great opportunity of meeting Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of the British Raj before his untimely death. Their take on this moment of Indias history, a critical juncture that heralded the true, definitive end of imperialism, and the end of the British Empire, a process that Churchill fought loquaciously to reverse, is both intricate and profoundly intrinsic to the true fabric of what Indias (and ergo Pakistans) founding fathers stood for. It is rare to find authors of such calibre who make the reading of the vast and gargantuan process that is history seem fluid and easy to latch on to and hence Dominique Lapierre and Harry Collins are undoubtedly my favorite historian authors of all time (including Tom Holland). This is the story of the eclipse of the British Raj and the birth of an independent India. At the center of this dramatic narrative are Nehru, Jinnah, Mountbatten, and of course, Gandhi, the gentle prophet of a revolution, who stirred the masses of the most populous area on earth without raising his voice. I was unable to include the first few pages of the book, but I did manage to find many excerpts which are showcased below.
