If were not able to be alone, were only going to know . . . how to be lonely. Nice distinction! I think social media do serve in real, not fake, ways as conduits of real, not fake, community. Like all technologies, social media are just a resource. Real, not fake people utilize resources in many different ways. Some people were probably upset by telephones when first widely used. To go back further, some people may have been troubled when language and numbers were first used. Just imagine the powers accrued to and conferred upon those who first wielded these technologies, powers that even now still attach to these social media. All depends upon the motivations of the sharer (speaker), as we former teachers of speech communication might say. And, on content, connections, and a variety of considerations of sharer and shared. So, turn off the media, quiet the iPhones, ignore your email and FB posts, and absorb real-time environs, with or without others, and without needing to manage, schedule, alter, respond. Allow the moment of now to expand. I.e., cultivate the art of doing nothing. I often set my phone to silence all. Of course, what you find out when you do silence all is that the world is not silent at all, and theres a whole world of sounds, music in the silence.
