If you are an armed officer it behooves you to NOT use force; you are duty bound to take the extra risk that it could be a gun WITHOUT shooting until it is clear the citizen is preforming an action that could cause harm to others. As a child of policeman I understand how the things they deal with daily can cause them to be jumpy; but, accepting that risk is part of the job. In my profession as a nurse we are physically abused often and if, even in raising an arm to deflect a blow, the attacking patient is injured : we are at fault! Any injury to THEM and we are potently subject to loss of job , license , and even jail. To not hold ARMED representatives of sanctioned force to a higher bar is inviting abuses. Groubert was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in connection with the incident. Bond was set at $75,000. Let us hope he receives a stiff sentence as a message to all officers that restraint is better that aggression.
