If you are visiting Kyoto this weekend, don’t forget to come to the Shimogamo Shrine to enjoy the Hotaru-bi no Chakai, a wonderful evening event in which you can see the ancient “Juni-hitoe” (the 12 layers Kimono on the photo), dance performances, Japanese tea ceremony and the release of 600 fireflies, all for free. Check out the details below. Enjoy! Date: June 8 (Saturday) Place: Shimogamo Shrine, Kyoto. 5:00 p.m. Ceremony in front of the central gate and tea ceremony start (reservation needed for the tea ceremony) 6:00 p.m. Juni-hitoe (12 layers kimono) dressing demonstration and dance performances at the Shinbukuden Hall. 8:00 p.m. Release of 600 fireflies on the Mitarashi-gawa (the creek in the middle of the shrine).
