(If you arent familiar with The Lawrence Welk Show, you should probably skip this.) PBS ran an Easter Welk show from about the beginning of the Reagan Revolution today. (1981?) While they kept coming back to church music, there were other songs and medleys like April Showers and Sunny Side of the Street, which sort of made sense in a springtime context. But there were two moments that were... memorable. The first was a George Cates arrangement of the hit songs from Fiddler on the Roof, and the Klezmer take on the opening number was almost as amusing as Irish tenor Joe Feeney singing Sunrise/Sunset…and jumping the octave for the last …laden with happiness and tears. But Anna Kanni sang Id Like to Teach the World to Sing in both English and Spanish, with a really rockin salsa chart, and the band was in the pocket. And although I never thought I would say these words…the swinginest version of that song I ever heard was done by the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. Will wonders never cease?
