If you go to City College this affects you. Last night the City - TopicsExpress

If you go to City College this affects you. Last night the City College Administration took over the Morales Shakur Center located in room NAC 3201, unannounced, without contacting the centers director Alyssa Ossorio. The Shakur Center was an independently run space that allowed students to congregate and study together. This space was also responsible for community outreach through Harlem, a Farm Share with Corbin Hill Farms that facilitated the community with affordable farm grown vegetables, and was the home of Students for Educational Rights, an activist group responsible for the extension of library hours in the college and supporters of the Anti-Petraeus protests. Like the Safe-Space in the first floor of the CCNY NAC (North Academic Center), The Shakur Center is sovereign from CCNY and under the jurisdiction of students, the administration cannot appropriate these rooms without notification. Yet despite the promise of sovereignty, the school went ahead and took over. Today at 10:30 am, public safety was ordered shut down the Colleges North Academic Center, which houses the main library and tech center, in the fear of protest to the reaction of the Shakur Centers changing predicament. This shutdown is happening during midterm week. After the administration emailed the student body last night promising 24 hour library access, public safety is not allowing students AND faculty to go inside the college, contradicting the promise of access to academic services and leaving faculty and students out in the cold. Right now students are coming together enmasse to protest the library shutdown, the centers shutdown, and the lack of professionalism displayed by the heads of public safety. Council-member Ydanis Rodrigues (D-NY, Washington Heights) is standing with the students, they are also expecting media coverage, and the size of this protest is growing. If you want to help call the offices of your local council member, or any mayoral candidate. Also there is an occupation being formally organized and students need supplies to stay overnight. Our school is located at 160 Convent Ave, New York. Please show solidarity and support to the students fighting against these oppressive measures. My number is 646 491 2388 if you need more information.
