If you havent heard it yet Lorde X The Night VI • V X VI • The fifth of a set of six covers by THE NIGHT VI. This song was chosen by lead vocalist and songwriter Sophie-Rose Harper. I love that feeling of being obsessed by 1 record, last year around this time it was Alt-J and the year before Frank Ocean, this time its Lorde. There are so many new artists popping up on our screens. Many pass me by but a whole year on from my last obsession (my more recent plays being filled with the golden oldies, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood, Eagles) I found her. Being a female vocalist my ears naturally fall to the voice and the lyrics and the beauty in this track are the moments where there is only a beat, a voice and a message. Initially, having seen Lordes posters popping up on the underground, I assumed just another 16 year old singing someone elses story because she has yet to experience her own and it not being my own discovery I had somewhat dismissed Lorde before I had even heard it. Anna nudged me to give it another chance so I put my judgmental mind aside and listened to Pure Heroine from beginning to end. I thought to myself she really is saying something here, in a new language and in a very 2013 kinda way. You could say its the greatest Lana del rey song Lana never wrote. When we recorded this I studied her lyrics and vocal to really get to grips with what I was going to do. Jack and I felt that we needed to take it back to basics, back to the guitar and vocal set up - the way in which we write songs. Stripped back the song still really stood up...and this method is the most honest. Once the band got their teeth into it, it really started to become our own. Annas harp parts so individual and unique, sparsely positioned throughout the track. Kristys vocal soaring throughout, theres no denying how much of a pro she is. Bo and Bogart are also such a team, they are the engine and together their groove is undeniable. Jacks guitar riffs feel very alike Thinking of You here; he has a knack for melancholy melodies with that delay that carries you through the song. With this cover, we changed a few chords and melodies and added some new elements to it to give it a good dose of The Night VI. We hope you enjoy, I sure as hell did!
