If you love gardens you cannot miss the beautiful Seghetti Panichi Historic Garden in Castel di Lama (Ascoli Piceno). It was planted between 1875 and 1890 by the renowned botanist and landscape gardener Ludwig Winter, once head gardener at Les Tuilleries. Winter had designed the Allée des Italiens in Cannes as well as many magnificent French and Italian gardens along the Riviera. He had just finished the famous Hanbury Gardens at “La Mortola”, Ventimiglia, in Liguria. On reaching the Tronto Valley he found a microclimate similar to the Ligurian gulf, allowing him to plant rare palm trees in the open air. At the time, many aristocratic European gardens were competing to grow palms outside their native ranges, but always in greenhouses to protect against snow and frost. Winter, as a skilled botanist, was a pioneer in matching species and microclimates to break free of this artifice.
