If you missed my speech to the Alpine School Board last night, - TopicsExpress

If you missed my speech to the Alpine School Board last night, here it is: My name is Chris Jolley. I am a dentist and I have business ownership experience. I am also a candidate for school board. I oppose the University Mall CDA for the following reasons: • The proper role of the school district does not include interfering with the free market. • By providing one developer a tax break and another developer no tax break, means the district would be picking winners and losers. • The lowered tax rate for the developer will trickle down to the retail businesses and create an uneven playing field between them and the competing businesses in the area. • If the developer of the Orem mall gets a tax break, it is not because his project is more worthy; it’s probably because he is a better lobbyist. • I don’t know if the Board is trying to practice cronyism, but if it were, it would look just like this. • Cronyism is not a principle of liberty; it is a principle of corruption. • Just because something is legal does not mean it is moral. • This is not a financial decision; it is a moral decision. The Board needs to have the courage to make moral decisions. • If the University Mall project is such a great idea, it will stand on its own without tax subsidies. • We expect our tax dollars to be spent on the education of our children and not to subsidize private businesses. • There is no guarantee that this project will be successful. Gambling with our tax dollars puts our children’s education at risk. • The role of the school board is to represent ALL the tax payers, bounded by the Utah and US Constitutions and following sound principles, in directing the district. Please represent ALL residents of the district, not just the largest land owner in Orem, and vote NO on the CDA. I will provide Ms. Vance a copy of my speech so she can put it in the written minutes word for word.
