If youre an LGBT supporter, DO NOT FORGET THE T. Transgender murders are 50% higher than Gay and Lesbian murders, and when Gays and Lesbians are murdered, its a hate crime. Not so with trans murders. Were at least ten times more likely to be murdered than cisgender people, and our murders are usually much more violent. Up to 68% of us are raped, and 61% of us who are raped attempt suicide. 55% of us are fired for being transgender, and its completely legal because NYS offers no protection for trans people. We are NOT covered under gay rights. We can be denied medical care, even in a life-threatening situation. We can be evicted from our lease, denied health insurance, and even kicked out of a restaurant. Up to 40% of all homeless youth are transgender, and at least a third of them are denied entry to a shelter because of their gender identity. I have experienced every one of these atrocities except murder. Ive been kicked out of where I live, fired from a contractual job, denied health insurance, denied entry to a shelter, kicked out of a soup kitchen, and denied by two different hospitals when I sought treatment for my second rape. The first hospital told me to just take a shower, and anyone who understands how a rape kit works will understand how monstrous that advice is. Many people shame me for not attending transgender marches, rallies, or political events. I am TERRIFIED to reveal my transgender status in public. The idea of being raped or attacked again makes me sick. Im just not strong enough to show my face in support. Im writing this very long post in the hope that ONE of you reading this will learn something, and think twice about using derogatory language that will one-day be seen as offensive as the N word. Its in our media, and Im asking you to rise above it. Please...for me.
