The labor contract that covers nearly 20,000 dockworkers is set to expire at the end of this month, with ongoing negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents workers, and the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents shipping lines and terminal operators. Businesses that trade in everything from fruits to iPhones are worried that the delay in settling on issues such as benefits and job security for workers will result in a major bottleneck and setback for business.
