If youre a gun owner you need to understand the implications of your actions should you ever find yourself in a self defense shooting. You need to understand that even in justified shooting scenarios you can still end up in prison for life. A gun owner educated in self defense law is a good gun owner. Otherwise, youre a guy with a gun risking spending your entire life in a cage. Lesson 2: You are not lawfully allowed to make assumptions before firing your weapon, and doing so will almost certainly come back to haunt you in court. You can not preemptively shoot because you assume someone is about to harm you or about to break into your home. You need to establish with near certainty that youre life is at serious risk before you even think of pointing that gun at anyone. And, just because someone is in your home without your permission, does not legally allow you to shoot them. You need to be able to articulate in court a clear and immediate danger to your life or the lives of your family. Otherwise, like Ted Wafer, you risk being put in a cage for the rest of your life. Forget anything youve heard about the Castle Doctrine, you simply can not pull that trigger unless the intruder is immediately threatening a life. Period.
