William Dawes, Giles Underwood basses. The Tudors at Prayer Henry VIII, Mary, and Elizabeth I dominated the political, social and religious life of England during the 16th century. They all valued music deeply, and it formed an important part of their daily lives, both public and private; each monarch had a profound impact on the form and function of sacred music. Magnificat performs a programme of some of the most ineffable and sublime music of the age, offering music that may have accompanied their Highnesses more introspective moments. “Magnificat’s cast list is about as good as it gets …” BBC Music Magazine “The sound these singers make is exquisite..” The Sunday Times A Tudor workshop for singers with Philip Cave A peaceful night and a perfect end: Music for Compline Following Event 7 singers are invited to join Philip Cave to explore the glorious repertory of the Tudor Church. Music studied will include Byrd’s ‘Lamentations’ and music for Compline by Tallis, White and Sheppard. The workshop is open to all voices; a reasonable level of sight singing will be advantageous.
